Scott McCloud is
a comic book and webcomic writer and artist who is known for his books on comic book theories. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, McCloud created his comic book series Zot in 1984, published by Eclipse Comics until 1990. In 1988, McCloud was the main author of the Creator Bill of Rights, a document destined to protect the rights of comic book artists. In 1990, he created the concept of the 24-hour comic; the goal was to create an entire comic story in only 24 hours.
In 1993, McCloud wrote and illustrated his first book on comic book theories, the highly regarded Understanding Comics. The book explained the inner workings of the medium and
examine many aspects of visual communication along
the way. In 1996, he started a 12-issue run on DC Comics' Superman Adventures.
Of his own admission, at this point, McCloud became obsessed by the Internet and the possibility to distribute comics on the Internet and the use of computer technology in comic book storytelling. In 1998, he published through Homage Studios The New Adventures of Abraham Lincoln, an association of computer generated and hand-drawn images.
His obsession of the Internet led McCloud to write and illustrate a second book of theories, Reinventing
Comics, released in 2000, in which he advocated 12 different
"revolutions" in the way comics are created,
distributed and perceived, with a special emphasis
on the potential of online comics. Nearly every
page seemed to step on somebody's toes, and the
debates in the comics industry over comics on the
Web have gotten increasingly heated since its
publication.
On his website, McCloud explored various formats of webcomics, such as the expanded canvas, but also in more recent years new format of scrolling with a zoom, most notably with The Right Number. On the business side of webcomics, McCloud served as an advisor for BitPass, a company that provided micropayments.
His last book, Making Comics, was released in 2006. McCloud followed the release of the book with a tour in North America accomplished over a year.
