Sam Rosen

[ Sam Rosen ]

Sam Rosen is an American calligrapher who is best known for his work as a letterer of numerous comic books for Marvel Comics, especially during the most cherished period of the company, what is commonly referred to as The Silver Age.

Rosen became his comic book career in 1940 in New York City as a letterer on Will Eisner's The Spirit. At the time, the series was published as a seven-page lead feature syndicated to newspapers.

Credits for Rosen in the 40s and 50s are hard to determine as artists and writers were rarely credited for their work until the early 60s. The first official credit for Rosen's work on a Marvel book was for a story published in The Incredible Hulk #3.

From this moment on, Rosen letterered and helped design the logos for most Marvel Comics published in the 60s with fellow letterer Art Simek, from The Amazing Spider-Man to The X-Men and Fantastic Four. His last credited work was on a Captain America issue published in December 1972.

His work on Conan The Barbarian is showcased in Adventures Into Digital Comics.
