Sal Buscema
Artist

[ Sal Buscema ]

Sal Buscema was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1936 where he spent his entire childhood. In 1956, he joined the army in order to start a career as an artist. At the time, the military draft was part of the life of every young man; people wouldn't get hired for long-term positions if they hadn't completed their military service first.

Once drafted, Buscema was stationed at Fort Belvoir as an illustrator. After his army stint he worked for Creative Arts Studio in Washington, D.C. Following in the footsteps of his big brother John, Buscema joined Marvel Comics in 1968. He was soon given his first official assignment: to ink Silver Surfer #4, pencilled by his brother. Overshadowed by John, Buscema spend the first few years of his career inking over his brother's pencils on the Silver Surfer and over Barry Windsor-Smith's pencils on Conan the Barbarian.

Having proven himself, Buscema was given regular pencilling chores for the Submariner, starting with issue #25 in May 1970. Through the 70s, Buscema also pencilled or inked issues of Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers, Captain America, Defenders, Thor, Incredible Hulk, ROM: Space Knight and most importantly Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man.

In the 1990s, besides working for Marvel, Buscema started inking such series as Superman, Superboy and Creeper for DC Comics. In the mid-90s, he went into semi-retirement but continued working arduously. Most recently, since early 2000, Buscema has been working on and off on the Spider-Girl and Amazing Spider-Girl titles, handling the inking chores over Ron Frenz. He also illustrates some covers for Marvel.

His work on Conan The Barbarian is showcased in Adventures Into Digital Comics.
