Cat Garza
Interviewee and Artist

[ Cat Garza ]Cayetano “cat” Garza Jr. was born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley in 1972. He started selling homemade comics in second grade. As a child, he read the humor comic Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew and a lot of comic strips such as Peanuts.

Garza took a few art courses while in high school. He went to UTPA where he received his Bachelor in Fine Arts with an emphasis on studio art. During his time at UTPA, he had access to a free website. This is at this time that he started to think about the possibilities to publish his own work directly on the Internet and he launched Magic Ink Well.

Aside from a print version of Magic Inkwell Comic Strip Theatre in comic book form published by Moordam Comics back in 1997, he was also part of the groundbreaking Eisner nominated Brainbomb anthology.  Cat also produces a strip and freelance illustrations for the Austin American-Statesman’s xl ent alternative weekly supplement.

Now living and working in White River Junction, Vermont, Garza publishes his current strip, Whimville on a daily basis. His other webcomics include Magic Ink Well and Cuentos De La Frontera.

He is considered as a pioneer in webdesign and interface for online comics. Garza was featured in Scott McCloud's book Reinventing Comics and Steve Withrow's book Toon Art: The Graphic Art of Digital Cartooning.

Cat Garza appears in Adventures Into Digital Comics.
